PicoWay Tattoo Removal Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is PicoWay laser tattoo removal?
PicoWay is a cutting-edge laser technology used to remove tattoos. It uses picosecond pulses to shatter tattoo ink into tiny particles that the body's lymphatic system can then eliminate. This method is known for its efficiency and reduced risk of side effects compared to traditional laser treatments, such as a Q-switch laser (nano second). The main difference in pico and nano lasers are the speed at which the energy is delivered into the skin. A Pico second is one trillionth of a second! This is 1,000 times faster than a nano second laser. Resulting in better results, less trauma to the skin and easier healing.
Pico lasers are photo acoustic (utilizes sound/frequency - almost no heat)
Nano lasers are thermal acoustic (utilizes heat)
This is the main reason a nano laser cannot effectively remove blues/greens/reds in tattoos, while a pico laser can.

2. How does PicoWay laser removal work?
The PicoWay laser emits short, high-energy pulses of light that target the tattoo ink particles in the skin. These pulses break the ink into millions of tiny particles, which are then gradually cleared away by the body’s lymphatic system. Utilizing a photo acoustic laser enables even the smallest ink particles to be shattered, unlike nano lasers that are only able to "melt" larger particles.

3. How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments required depends on several factors including functionality of the lymphatic system, size, colors used, age of the tattoo and depth of ink. Two people could have the same exact tattoo, one could only need 3 sessions, while the other needs 12.
The most important factor is the body's lymphatic system & it's ability to flush out the broken down particles. It is always easier to tell how many sessions it will take after the first session has completely healed.
4. Is the procedure painful?
Patients often describe the sensation during the treatment as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin, a zap, or a bacon grease pop. This will also vary widely by pain tolerance and location of the tattoo on the body. The process is more painful than having a tattoo done, but usually takes less than 5 minutes from start to finish for most tattoos.

5. What should I expect after the treatment?
After a session, the treated area might be red, swollen, or tender. This is a normal part of the healing process. You may also experience some peeling, scabbing or blistering. Following aftercare instructions, such as keeping the area clean and applying any recommended ointments, is crucial for optimal healing. Most clients heal on the surface in 7-10 days.
6. Are there any side effects?
Possible side effects include redness, swelling, blistering, and temporary changes in skin pigmentation. Serious side effects are rare but can include scarring or infection if aftercare instructions are not followed.
7. How long does each session take?
A typical PicoWay session lasts between 5-15 minutes in most cases. Larger tattoos sometimes take longer.

9. Can PicoWay remove all tattoo colors?
PicoWay is effective on a wide range of colors, especially challenging ones like green and blue, due to its versatility. However, results can vary based on the specific ink and tattoo. Currently, the pico laser is by far the most effective at removing colors than any other laser on the market. We carry all hand pieces (wavelengths) that are available to remove every color.
10. Is PicoWay safe for all skin types?
PicoWay is generally safe for all skin types, but Fitzpatrick 5-6 must be treated more carefully due to the increased risk for hyperpigmentation. The PicoWay is one of the only laser that can safely treat all skin types, however, it may take longer to treat Fitzpatrick 5-6.
11. How long should I wait between treatments?
We recommend that our clients wait at least 12-14 weeks in between sessions.
Typically, the body has healed the area after about 4-6 weeks post session. However, it will continue to flush pigment particles for an additional 6-8 weeks (potentially longer). This is because healing the treated area is separate from the bodies flushing of pigment particles.
Your body will prioritize healing first. Once this is successful, it will delegate more energy/resources to flushing pigment.
Broken down pigment is not "dangerous" to your body, unlike a wound.
If the area is treated again immediately after healed (usually 4-6 weeks post), the process starts all over again and the body will prioritize healing over flushing pigment. Losing the benefits of the previous session. This prolongs to removal process as a whole.
Waiting 12-14 weeks means less sessions and better clearance.
12. Will the tattoo be completely removed?
Most tattoos can be completely removed, but results can vary. Some residual ink may remain, particularly with certain colors and/or tattoos that were placed too deep (harder to reach).
13. What is the cost of PicoWay laser tattoo removal?
The cost varies depending on the size. Most practices charge $250-$500 for a PicoWay session, depending on the size.
